FLOATING market is expected to open in Myanmar’s most popular Inle Lake in November this year, The Global New Light of Myanmar reported today.
“We are discussing a plan to develop the Inle floating market in Inle Lake. We will choose the best location for the market,” U Ohn Maung, Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism was quoted as saying in the report.
The report said that the ministry is cooperating with the forestry department to procure the woods required for the construction of boats for the market.
The floating market is expected to further develop the tourism in the Inle region, as well as to create more jobs opportunities for the local people.
According to the ministry, there are about 105 hotels with 3,410 rooms in the Nyaung Shwe-Inle region. The ministry’s figure also stated that it has issued licenses to 70 tour companies, 257 vehicles, 1,204 vessels, 386 tour guides and 934 local tour guides in the region.
Inle Lake is a scenic highland lake in Shan state. It is easily accessible by plane from Yangon, Bagan or Mandalay to Heho airport. From there it is a 35km journey by road to Nyaung Shwe, the main “marina’ for pick-up by boat.
